UNDERSTANDING ADHD IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Dr. Margaret Dempsey and Dr. Tracy Harrington from the Child Study Center will be back at Gladney to provide a training on Understanding ADHD in Children and Adolescents. They will focus on defining ADHD; explaining the criteria used to arrive at the diagnosis; and understanding severity, prevalence, and developmental course. In this training, the presenters will discuss:
- Possible causes and contributing factors
- Understanding what we know about brain involvement, treatment, and protective factors
- Conditions that may look like ADHD
- Common problems associated with ADHD
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Margaret Dempsey, Ph.D. — Director of Psychology, Licensed Psychologist
Dr. Margaret Dempsey is the Director of Psychology at the Child Study Center where she has been for the past 10 years. Dr. Dempsey earned her PhD in School Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She completed her clinical internship in a Pediatric Psychology medical clinic and hospital at Michigan State University. After graduating, she was an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Tulane University in New Orleans for five years. Afterwards, Dr. Dempsey worked in a clinical setting conducting psychological evaluations for children and adolescents with attention, learning, behavioral, and emotional challenges as well as providing individual therapy. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Dempsey chose to relocate back to the Metroplex to be closer to her family. Her clinical interests include the assessment of children with learning difficulties, anxiety/mood disorders, ADHD, and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Tracy L. Harrington, Ph.D. — Licensed Psychologist
Dr. Tracy Harrington has been a licensed psychologist at the Child Study Center for the past 7 years. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her research and clinical interests include the assessment of children and adolescents and early childhood disorders, including ADHD, Developmental Delays, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. She also enjoys providing parent training to parents of children with disruptive behaviors and is interested in early intervention.
